History
Tourism plays a significant role in the economy of Nepal. It has the potential to play yet a greater role, not only in the economic front but also in poverty reduction, cultural restoration, rural employment generation and smoothing out regional imbalances in the human and material development of the country. To exploit this potential, Nepal needs competent human resources at every level of the organizational hierarchy and also at the entrepreneurial level.
Realizing this fact almost two and a half decades back, i.e. in 1995, a small beginning was done by a woman entrepreneur to contribute in the human resources development of the country in the form of Institute of Tourism and Fashion Technology (ITFT) at Durbar Marg in collaboration with a foreign institution. The next logical step was to approach the beacon of hope for higher education in Nepal, Tribhuvan University, which kindly accepted the proposal in 1998 to run the pioneer program- Bachelor of Travel and Tourism Management (BTTM) at the undergraduate level to address the needs of the tourism industry. This year is a milestone in the history of tourism management education in Nepal.
After successfully running BTTM for nine years, the need to launch another tourism sector program, Master in Tourism Management (MTM), was highly realized and NCTTM forwarded its EOI to be accredited the program to Tribhuvan University in 2007. In 2008, it got affiliated to Tribhuvan University to run the MTM program. After running twelve years of BTTM, NCTTM got the opportunity to extend its Bachelor level program in Hotel Management (BHM) under Tribhuvan University in 2010. In 2012, NCTTM registered its sister organization ‘NCTTM Event and Training Management Pvt. Ltd.’ to produce semi-skilled human resources needed primarily in the tourism and hospitality industry.
